At the Criminal Museum we walked in very silly and walked out less so. The history of law items were really interesting... including this book. The torture devices and the reasons for torture were less so and some were even very unsettling. It's hard to wrap your head around someone purposefully using these on another human being.
"Iron Maiden! Excellent!"
This one was kind of funny. It was about 4 feet tall and was reserved for those that fell asleep during church. You'd have to wear it and stand at the door of the church for however long they decided your punishment was.
This was a Declaration of War by Emperor Leopold I to declare war on France during the Spanish War.
These were the law books on commerce... If you tried to sell a fish that was smaller than the ones pictured you were punished. If you were a tailor and made clothing for people above their station, both you and the client were punished by someone cutting up your clothing. If you were a gossip, you had to wear a metal mask with a giant nose.... etc...
I thought these seals were really neat though. The more seals that you had for any given venture, the more support you had behind you... anything from getting permission to marry to selling wine in various states of the Empire.
I loved this... like a Medieval Rapunzel.
