Since it was on our way to a genealogy site in Switzerland, we drove through they country of Liechtenstein. It's only 62 square miles and we crossed through it in just a matter of a few minutes, including a stop off to admire the castle on the hill. Gutenberg Castle is one of 4 castle/large houses in the country. The government bought it to be converted into a museum on the death of the current owner. Reading up on their history was interesting. It's kind of neat how they were able to stay out of a lot of the political wars that were going on all around it. It sounds like they were more involved in WWI and WWII more than any of the Napoleonic Wars.
Funny story, my Dad pulled up at the border crossing. He speaks German, but the area has it's own dialect and he couldn't understand the guard. He kept asking us a question and my Dad shrugged. Finally the guard asked, "Tourist?" "Yes, tourist." He didn't ask for passports or anything, he just waved us through and went on his business.
This is a picture of Liechtenstein from the Switzerland side of the river.
