We stayed the night in an AirBnB in Munich. It was the strangest one that we'd stayed in. Apparently it was a single guy's home and he'd crash at someone else's house when he rented his out. He just had three double beds in the loft of his apartment. We didn't spend much time in Munich. We slept there, then Janelle and I were dropped of at Nymphenburg Palace while everyone else went to visit the infamous concentration camp at Dachau. We visited it last time we were in Germany. The way I describe it to others is a very intense spiritual experience that I'm okay experiencing only once. I also had the privilege of visiting the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. and an exhibit in either SLC or San Francisco at one point. It's good to remember cruelty so that we can have compassion.
Dachau was the first of about 100 concentration camps. It saw the deaths of at least 32,000 people within it's gates... even more on the way and on the death march out when the American troops were getting too close. It was meant to be a re-education camp for 6,000 people, but it consistently housed about 11,000 people. The people were used as guinea pigs in horrendous experiments. After the war, it housed the Nazi war criminals waiting for trial.
This is the one thing besides some of the collections of shoes, human skinned lamp shades, human hair cloth, etc... that stuck in my head from our visit 20 years ago. To me it was a very apt description of what happened here.
