As we left Maryland, we realized that we were driving into the path of a hurricane/tropical storm. Most of what we had planned was for before the storm was supposed to hit, but our flight out was right in the middle of when the storm was to be there and our connecting flight in New York was right as the storm was supposed to be in New York.
Our first stop was Kitty Hawk. That was such a neat museum! It was small but really well done. I loved all the perspectives from all over the world and how it described the conditions and time that it took. I also loved that it talked about the help they received in the community which is part of the reason why they were working there. We got there before it started raining, parked and that was it.... It started pouring. I had to run all our electronics back to the car because we were getting so wet. The monument at the top of the hill was neat, but I loved the markers of where the flights landed. Emily had told us about this really cool candy store at Kitty Hawk too. Since we weren't really able to go to the beach in the downpour, we went there instead. The kids had a blast picking out candies and looking at all the variety. They got 1/4 lb for $4... so that's what we did.
We decided to drive straight to John and Diane's house after visiting Kitty Hawk, just in case the storms were worse than we thought. We had so much fun chatting, hugging, petting animals, doing magic tricks, and they even did ice cream sundaes for Seth's birthday. We got to our hotel at 4am, went to sleep and woke up feeling uneasy. (Actually Sam and Ada didn't sleep, they washed all our sopping wet clothes from Kitty Hawk so they didn't mold. My heroes!)
Evelyn thought that this tissue flower was really cool.
This girl was so funny. She got peed on by baby chicks, a hedgehog, a kitten and something else I reckon. She decided to shower when we got to the hotel...
These are the markers of where each of the first flights got to.
This presentation was so neat, and our kids were so tired and cold!
I didn't know that part of the Wright brother's first plane was taken to the moon. That was a neat tidbit.
