How is it that my just barely 2 year old son can dress and undress himself, and often does... including starting to take off his diaper... but my soon to be 4 year old daughter that knows how to dress and undress herself prefers not to... if I persuade her to every morning it takes an extra 30 minutes... if I don't, I feel like I'm not teaching her. Hmmm... conundrum.
I think that Ada is ready for some new things... she's so bright and catches on to things quickly. But she won't be going to Kindergarten for 3 more years because of the age cut off. I'd like to start doing something with her, like piano lessons, and reading. I feel comfortable with the piano lessons because I've been teaching for about 7 years... but I've never taught anyone to read before. I was a reading tutor in Elementary School, but they were students that already had the basics and the teacher gave me the things I was supposed to be tutoring. Where do you start when you start from scratch?

I got the Hooked on Phonice program for Amber when she was ready to learn. It starts with letter flashcards to teach letter recognition and sounds. Once she knows all the letters and their sounds, there's a workbook with new lessons and small books to suppliment and help her feel like she's accomplishing something (Daddy! I read a book today!). I got mine off ebay - all 5 levels for like $50 I think. Or you can get them individually for less. But I'd go with ebay for the best deal.
Ruth wouldn't dress herself until the doctor told her she had to. Then she cried but she did it. She was 4. maybe Ada needs an outside influence here too.
As far as reading goes-- Start by teaching her the alphabet and sounds. I've done it 2 ways. One by teaching the letters and then the sounds (normal way). 2 to just teach the sounds, when they can string them into words then start teaching them the names of the letters. I usually opt for number one because of what they need to know for school, but number 2 eases them more quickly into reading. I did number 2 with Johnny number one with my other 4. I think I will try number 2 again with Anya after she turns 4.
And Ada actually starts school 2 years from next week. You are getting there. Toddler years are the slow ones. After school starts time flies and you will miss your kids.
Oh and I find teaching my kids is a great way to spend time together.
That is one awesome prop! I bought a few props, just to take pics with my kids, and maybe a future kid who is not yet expected. How silly huh? I love it!
Ellen taught herself to read from Starfall.com. It is an amazing program that walks them through the alphabet with sounds and then has programs that help them blend. I also have a book called, "Teach your Child to read in 100 easy lessons" that is really good and I plan on using with Trevor.
