Flighty parent

I never wanted to be that flighty parent.  You know the ones I'm talking about... the ones that space out on not just one, but two of their parent/teacher appointments in a row.  The one that forgets about a dentist appointment until the day of...   I am.  I'll get back on top, but right now... I am.

Good news though.  Ada is doing awesome in school.  She's testing at 1.5 for math level, so she'll be starting 2nd grade math next year.  She's also testing really well in reading.  When they test the kindergarteners for reading levels, they're looking for a score starting at 20 to pass.  Ada was testing in the 58 range.  Bad news is that she's tired of school and wants to stop... because she's doing so well, I think I'll let her read more fun books and not only focus on the send home books every day.  That might make it funner for her.  Summer can't come soon enough for me either!  It'll be fun.

Here are a few of the tricks that Ada's been trying out to make her homework less tedious.  I think they're fun, but they do make it take longer to do.  She has to read her 16-18 pg book 3 times through to pass it off.  I make her read it straight through the first time without playing... then I let her get creative.  She turns them into operas and sings the whole book.  She reads the sentences by alternating the word order and laughing at the results.  And my personal favorite, she started from the very back of the book and read the entire thing backwards... even sounding out all the words backwards.  It's pretty funny.  And she doesn't whine about it being too long, or boring, etc.... Sometimes she sees how fast she can read the book, which is my personal favorite use of homework time... but entertainment value.... the backwards book is pretty funny.

I asked Evelyn what she wanted for dinner. She said, "I don't know. You make it. I eat it." Yay! A child that will eat what I make!

Power of Women

I have the most amazing Mother and Mother in law ever... they've taken care of shuttling kids everywhere, doing laundry, dishes, playing with kids, letting me sleep.  You guys are the best!

Couch potato

So, I've been stuck in bed for almost a week.  I HATE it!  How do people do this long term?  I've read 5 books, watched 4 movies, read countless books to kiddos, played Nintendo with Sam.  While the extra kid time is fun, I'm having a hard time letting people do everything for me.  Here's to hoping I'm up and at em soon.

Happier note....
Evelyn says, "Amen!" when we finish reading a book together.
Sam asked the other day if we were going to be watching the rainbow rings movie.  It took me a while to realize he was talking about the Olympics.... and then it really hit me that since my kids watch movies, not tv, they have no concept of the fact that it's live on the other side of the world... not a movie.  Huh.
Ada is doing awesomely in school, but I realized that her classes don't let Kindergarteners be kids very well.  They expect them to sit quietly, with only 15 mins of wiggle time worked into the 3 hour day.  If they aren't behaving, instead of planning some wiggle room, they make them practice walking quietly in the hallway.  Sheesh... They are just kids you know.  No wonder Ada is getting tired of school already.

Of course

My visiting teachie breaks her foot when I'm down with pneumonia... Good timing.
